Trump supporters are taking a stand against Starbucks and it has to be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. It all started when a man went into his local Starbucks and complained of “white discrimination” because his coffee was taking too long. He then began harassing customers and the barista, proclaiming that he voted for Donald Trump and that they were all trash. The tantrum was caught on video and now fellow Trump supporters are standing with the man by protesting the coffee chain.
How do they suggest sticking it Starbucks, you ask? Easy, by buying more Starbucks.  Trump supporters have launched  Operation #TrumpCup, a protest where they go to Starbucks and tell the barista their name is “Trump.” If Starbucks refuses to use this name, they’ll essentially cry discrimination and record it on video. Here’s the problem: how are you going to patronize an establishment as form of protest? That’s the most backwards form of protest in the world.
The very definition of a boycott itself is to withdraw from commercial or social relations with an organization as a punishment or protest. Since the dawn of time, everyone who’s ever boycott something knows that the key to a successful protest is to not give the company your business. Show them how powerful your dollar is. Martin Luther King knew it. Black Lives Matter knew it. Trump supporters don’t know this. In fact this wouldn’t be the first time they’ve purchased something to show their distaste.
Do you remember when people were burning Colin Kaepernick jerseys to show that they did not support him kneeling during the National Anthem? This was another dumb form of protest. How does burning an item YOU bought, affect Colin Kaepernick? Whether you keep the jersey or it goes up in flames, Colin Kaepernick already got his money from its sales. He’s not bothered one bit.
Now Trump supporters are threatening to boycott the Broadway musical, Hamilton, because the cast shared a few words for VP-elect Mike Pence and the crowd booed him. Â Problem is, you can’t boycott a sold out show. We will probably be electing the next president of the United States before you’ll even have the chance to buy tickets to see Hamilton.
Like a young prophet once said: “How you gonna hate from outside the club, you can’t even get in.”
The most recent “protests” go to show that some people have never had to fight for injustice, so they wouldn’t even know where to start. If you’ve never been mistreated by society, you don’t know how to fight back against it. Protesting and Boycotting is a lot harder than it looks, isn’t it?
