MAGA supporters breached the Capitol building as chaos erupted over the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes that confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s as the United States’ next president.
The breach took place shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with thousands of Trump supporters overpowering barriers along the Capitol’s perimeter. The protesters clashed with law enforcement, who were also overpowered and ill-equipped for the massive crowd. After nearly 9 minutes, the angry mob was able to enter the Capitol building. The House floor was quickly evacuated by law enforcement.
One woman is listed in critical condition after being shot in the chest at some point on the Capitol ground.
Trump pleaded with his supporters to be peaceful with law enforcement.
“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” he tweeted. His son, Donald Trump Jr., also called for peace, saying that the mob of MAGA supporters are “wrong and not who we are.”
Footage from inside the Capitol showed MAGA enthusiasts storming through various parts of the Country’s most notable government building.
The U.S. Capitol Police are requesting additional police assistance. So far, it does not appear that they have been granted any. A source told CNN that several suspicious devices were planted outside of the Capitol building, giving an insider glimpse at how dire the situation is becoming.
Inside the House chamber, Capitol police instructed lawmakers to hide under their chairs. Many of them have phone family members to let them know of the grave situation.
As of now, the National Guard has decided against moving in on the crowd.
