The Trump administration will host a Black History Month celebration at the White House on Thursday, continuing a long-standing tradition. However, the event comes at a time when Trump has been actively dismantling federal diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, leading to a mix of recognition and controversy.
Trump has repeatedly called DEI initiatives “discrimination,” issuing an executive order to eliminate them across federal agencies. The move has already led to layoffs of DEI workers, restrictions on how agencies can discuss race, and pressure on private companies to shift their focus toward “merit-based” hiring instead.
Despite this, the East Room celebration will bring together Black political figures, entertainers, and sports personalities, many of whom have been outspoken supporters of Trump.

According to a White House official, the guest list includes:

While the White House prepares for its Black History Month event, another high-profile gathering took place Wednesday night at Mar-a-Lago.
Singer and industry critic Jaguar Wright was awarded the Defender of Freedom honor, presented by General Michael Flynn. Wright, known for her outspoken criticism of the music industry, was praised for her “unwavering commitment to truth and justice.”
In a statement, the award committee described Wright as “a bold and unapologetic voice in the fight for transparency and accountability.”
Adding to the significance of the night, former President Donald Trump was also in attendance, showing support for Wright and the event.
