Donald Trump is already claiming a win in the 2020 Presidential Election and is vowing to have his lawyers intervene, and take it to the United States Supreme Court in an effort to stop the vote count.
According to Newsweek, Trump spoke to his supporters at the White House early on Wednesday morning and told them that the Democrats were trying to “disenfranchise” people who had voted for him. “Millions of people voted for us tonight,” he said. “A very sad group of people is trying to in the disenfranchise that group of people. And we won’t stand for it.”
Trump called this election “an embarrassment to our country. We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this election.”
He proclaimed this, even as at last count, he was trailing former Vice President Joe Biden in electoral college votes, according to the Associated Press. Trump currently has 213 electoral college votes to Biden’s 224.
The true embarrassment is that the election is a close as it is at all, with Trump pulling out necessary wins for his campaign in Florida, Ohio, Iowa and Texas.
The results are yet to be released from the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Michigan. The final voting results were not readily available on election night because of an increased number of Americans using mail-in ballots to cast their votes.
But Trump has long warned his supporters that the increased usage of mail-in ballots would lead to an increase in election fraud.
He told his followers that his campaign was “up BIG” but said “they are trying to STEAL the election,” likely referencing Democrats and the mail-in ballots.
“We will never let them do it,” Trump posted on Twitter. “Votes cannot be cast after the Poles (sic) are closed!”
As it stands right now, this election is still anyone’s to take. 46 electoral college votes are still in play with Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, yet to be decided.
Biden also gave a brief update to his supporters, early Wednesday morning, telling them: “It’s not my place or Donald Trump’s place to declare who’s won this election,” he said. “That’s the decision of the American people but I’m optimistic about this outcome.”
