Donald Trump warned Elon Musk that he’ll face “very serious consequences” if he gives money to Democrats running against Republicans who back the GOP’s budget bill.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump said in a Saturday phone interview with NBC News, though he declined to specify what those might be.
Trump made it clear he’s done trying to fix things. “No,” he said when asked if he wanted to repair the relationship. “I would assume so, yeah,” he added when asked if their ties were officially broken.
The fallout followed a heated exchange across social media. Musk criticized Trump’s budget and tariffs, even calling for impeachment in a now-deleted post. Trump fired back, hinting at canceling SpaceX contracts: “The easiest way to save money…is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”
Despite Musk’s financial support in 2024 and his early role in the administration, Trump says he’s not focused on retribution. “I haven’t given it any thought,” he said.
As for the GOP budget? Trump believes it’s stronger than ever. “The Republican Party has never been united like this before,” he said, crediting Musk’s opposition for boosting attention.
But one thing is clear: Trump’s not talking to Musk anytime soon. “I’m too busy doing other things,” he said.
