A member on Trump’s council to reopen the country and a Washington Examiner columnist, Conservative economist, Stephen Moore, compared the recent protesters who are protesting the states’ stay-at-home orders to mother of the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks.
Moore gave praises to the thousands of people who are flooding the streets and the state’s capital buildings to protest the strict stay-at-home orders that continue to prevent people’s ability to move around freely.
The protesters are pushing for the government to reopen nonessential businesses that shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused millions of Americans to lose their job.
Moore tells the Wahington Post, “I think there’s a boiling point that has been reached and exceeded. I call these people the modern-day Rosa Parks — they are protesting against injustice and a loss of liberties.”
In 1955, Parks ignited the Montgomery bus boycott after being arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white male passenger. Park was arrested and charged with civil disobedience for violating Alabama’s segregation laws.
The stay-at-home protests have spread to several states while receiving support from Trump, who tweeted Friday morning, telling the residents in Michigan, Minnesota, and Virginia “liberate” themselves and reopen their economies.
Later, Trump explained his tweet during Friday’s press briefing, saying the stay-at-home that the state has implemented are, “too tough,” but urged the governors of the states to keep their stay-at-home orders in place.
Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, is facing an online petition that is requesting she be recalled over the strict stay-at-home mandate. In response to the protesters and the 150,000 signatures in the petition, Whitmer says the protests within her state could lead to a more extended shutdown.
