Nine months into Trump’s presidency, the first charges have been filed in the special counsel investigation regarding the presidential election and more.
On Monday, the celebrity-in-chief’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, turned himself in, after a lengthy investigation for violations of federal tax law, money laundering and undisclosed Ukrainian business dealings. Surrendering alongside Manafort was his former business partner and protégé, Rick Gates.
Gates had been linked to companies overseas that were set up to take payments from politicians and businesspeople, reports state. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Manafort reportedly expected charges since this summer when his house was raided. Initially, many believed he would spill the beans on Trump in exchange for a deal, but Trump’s lawyer revealed then that Manafort had nothing on the celebrity-in-chief. However, in July, The New York Times released a report accusing Manafort and others in Trump’s camp of meeting with Russians to get damaging information about Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign.
Manafort has reportedly been charged with conspiracy against the U.S. and money laundering.
