An Arizona police officer who shot and killed a man in a wheelchair in November was fired on Wednesday as the result of an internal investigation, Tucson Police Chief Chris Mangus said in a statement posted to the department’s website.
The officer, Ryan Remington,  was terminated, effective immediately, the statement explained. He can appeal the department’s decision to the Tucson Civil Service Commission within ten days, the statement continued.
The process to fire Remington began the day after he opened fire on an alleged shoplifter who was accused of pulling a knife during a confrontation outside of a local Walmart.
According to the video released by the Tucson Police Department showed Remington several steps behind the wheelchair-bound man, identified by police as 61-year-old Richard Lee Richards. Remington had asked Richards to stop before firing nine rounds at the man, striking him in the back and side — as Richards headed into another store.
