Tupac Shakur has been honored once again with the renaming of a street in Oakland, CA in his memory.

As reported by The Associated Press, a section of MacArthur Boulevard, which is close to where Tupac resided for a period, was officially renamed Tupac Shakur Way on Friday. The late rapper’s family and notable figures from the Hip Hop community, including MC Hammer, were in attendance at the event.

“Let his spirit live on the rest of these years in these streets and in your hearts,” Shakur’s sister said, while Hammer referred to Tupac as “the greatest rapper ever.”

Additionally, City Councilwoman Carroll Fife, who’s responsible for the renaming, added, “He claimed Oakland. He said Oakland gave him his game.”

The official renaming of MacArthur Blvd. began in May of this year. According to The Oaklandside, during that time, the Oakland City Council was in the process of voting to change the name of a stretch of MacArthur Boulevard to “Tupac Shakur Way.”

Despite being born on the East Coast, Tupac’s career took off in Oakland, where he initially worked as a roadie and background dancer for Digital Underground. Furthermore, he crafted the majority of his iconic albums while residing in California, including “2Pacalypse Now” in 1991, “Strictly For My N.I.G.G.A.Z.” in 1993, “Me Against The World” in 1995, and “All Eyez On Me” in 1996.
