A Turkish pop star is now serving time under house arrest for making a “joke” that took aim at religious schools.
Turkish music artist Gulsen Bayraktar Colakoglu was released from jail today and placed on house arrest after she was arrested last week over controversial statements she made about one of the musicians at a concert she performed at back in April. CNN World reports.
He “graduated from Imam Hatip (religious schools). That’s where his pervert side comes from,” said Gulsen. The entire indent was captured on video. Despite her apologizing and calling her words a “joke,” she was later charged with “inciting or insulting the public to hatred and enmity.”
After her release, she took to social media and apologized to “anyone who was offended” by her comments, saying her words were misinterpreted and presented by “malicious people who aim to polarize our country.”
“I made a joke with my colleagues, with whom I have worked for many years in the business. It has been published by people who aim to polarize society,” said Gulsen.
