A tragic discovery was made at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when two bodies were found in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft. The remains were located during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection on Monday night, shortly after the plane arrived from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
JetBlue confirmed the incident in a statement, expressing condolences and their commitment to cooperating with authorities. “This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred,” the airline said.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office reported that paramedics declared both individuals dead at the scene. The identities of the deceased and the circumstances of how they accessed the wheel well remain under investigation. The sheriff’s homicide and crime scene units are leading the probe.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated there was “no involvement of the flight crew or operation of the airplane” and confirmed that it is not conducting an investigation.
This marks the second incident in recent weeks involving bodies found in an aircraft’s wheel well. In late December, a body was discovered in the landing gear compartment of a United Airlines flight after it landed in Maui from Chicago.
The airline industry has also faced issues with unticketed passengers gaining access to flights in recent months. In November, a Russian national bypassed security to board a Delta Air Lines flight from New York to Paris and was arrested upon arrival in France. On Christmas Eve, an unticketed passenger boarded a Delta flight from Seattle to Honolulu and was discovered before takeoff.
