Apalachee High School to Remain Closed While Surrounding Schools Set to Reopen Tuesday Following Massacre

At least four people were killed, and dozens were injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, CNN reports. The school, located about 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, became the center of a significant law enforcement response after reports of gunfire were made around 10:23 a.m. The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that one suspect is in custody as the investigation continues.

Following the incident, all schools in the Barrow County School District were placed under a “soft lockdown” as a precautionary measure. Apalachee High School was the primary focus of police activity, with numerous emergency vehicles present on the scene. Students were directed to the school’s football stadium for safety while authorities secured the area and assessed the situation.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp responded to the incident, stating that he had directed state resources to assist with the response and expressed his concern for those affected. “I urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” the governor said in a statement. Meanwhile, Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta confirmed that it is treating one of the victims.

The investigation into the events at Apalachee High School is ongoing, and the Sheriff’s Office has not yet released details on a possible motive or the identity of the suspect.
