Two people lost their lives in a small plane crash at Covington Municipal Airport on Saturday night in Covington, Georgia. This is approximately 35 minutes from downtown Atlanta.
The Covington Police Department is now investigating the incident.
Around 11:40 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) notified authorities about a single-engine Rockwell Commander that had taken off from the airport. However, officials stated there was no communication from the plane following its departure.
Responding officers found the wreckage in the woods, located just north of the runway. The bodies of two people were discovered at the crash site and were pronounced dead by authorities at the scene.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are now working together to determine the cause of the crash.
This incident adds to a troubling series of tragic events, including the recent fatal crash involving a motorcyclist in South Fulton and the investigation into a missing teacher at Lake Oconee.
Both the FAA and NTSB continue their work to uncover the facts behind this deadly accident.
