Two more victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center have been identified nearly 20 years after the tragedy.

The New York City chief medical examiner’s office released the victims’ names just days before the 20th anniversary. Dorothy Morgan, of Hempstead, has been identified as the 1,646th person, and an unidentified man is the 1,647th person. The other victim’s name is being withheld at the request of his family.

Both victims were identified through DNA analysis of remains collected at the site of the disaster. Morgan’s remains were found in 2001. The unidentified man’s remains were found in 2001, 2002, and 2006. So far, 60 percent of the 2,753 people who died have been identified.

They are the first victims to be identified since October of 2019.

“Twenty years ago, we made a promise to the families of World Trade Center victims to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to identify their loved ones, and with these two new identifications, we continue to fulfill that sacred obligation,” said New York City’s Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, in a statement.

She added, “No matter how much time passes since September 11, 2001, we will never forget, and we pledge to use all the tools at our disposal to make sure all those who were lost can be reunited with their families.”

The continuing effort to identify all the attack victims’ remains the most extensive and most complex forensic investigation the country has ever conducted.
