Two New Jersey Officers Shot in Newark, Suspected Gunman Still at Large

Tuesday, two police officers were reportedly shot in Newark, New Jersey, by a suspect armed with a long gun.

One officer was shot in the neck, the other in the leg, law enforcement sources said. They were transported to University Hospital, and their conditions are not yet known.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted, “I am aware of and closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark. I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.”

The wounded officers were reportedly serving a warrant at a home around 2 p.m. and that’s when shots rang out from an elevated location, possibly a window or a roof, officials said. Law enforcement sources confirmed the gunman fled to the top of a nearby building and is still at large.

New Jersey State Police, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, SWAT officers, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the U.S. Marshals Service all responded to the scene.
