Two students from the University of New Hampshire have been arrested for allegedly using stolen credit cards to pay for their college tuition.
On May 16, police arrested both Chunyang Li and Chenghan Wang in Durham on fraud charges connected to the alleged plot, according to University of New Hampshire police. Authorities say Li tried to pay the college more than $56,000 with credit cards from Texas, California, Virginia, Florida, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Australia. As for Wang, he allegedly used a stolen credit card from a person who lives In Maryland to pay off a $6,300 college bill.
The students new hampsire reports that police launched an investigation after the activity was flagged by the school’s business office. The 20-year-olds both hail from China and say they were contacted by an unknown person who offered to pay for their schooling at a discounted price. Wang and Li ended up sending over money to the person but then later received a notice that their tuition had not been paid for.
Li told investigators that he had no knowledge of the man paying for the tuition with stolen credit cards and a traffic line. Now, Li has been charged with nine felonies and Wang with one felony and one misdemeanor charge of attempted fraud. Both students pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been released on $5,000 bail.
