Tyler Perry Reportedly Interested In Purchasing BET; Byron Allen Is Also In The Running

Tyler Perry is considering buying a majority stake in BET after years of producing content for the network.

The “Madea” creator has reportedly been in talks with Paramount Global, its parent company, to acquire the network. Perry currently owns a minority stake in BET Media Group, which covers BET, VH1, BET Studios, and BET+, which he helped to launch in 2019. Perry has created several projects under the deal, including hit series “Sistas” and “The Oval.” With Paramount looking into selling it in recent months, Perry has emerged as the most competent possible owner.

Paramount Global has been looking to lean more into its Pluto TV and Paramount+, which merged with Showtime’s streaming service. There, a new owner for BET will provide more wiggle room to expand these endeavors. Aside from Perry, Variety reports that Byron Allen has also expressed interest in acquiring the network. Allen’s portfolio is also impressive, making him another viable option. Last year, he purchased the Black News Channel and has invested in several Fox affiliates over the years.

No matter which of these heavyweights buys BET, if the deal is finalized, Paramount is expected to maintain a minority stake and any active commercial agreements put in place before the acquisition.

Neither Allen nor Perry has commented publicly on the deal.
