Tyler Perry has inked a new collaboration with Netflix, entering into a multi-year, first-look agreement to write, direct, and produce feature films.
This agreement includes a total of eight films to be produced over the course of four years. Ari Emanuel, the CEO of Endeavor and TKO, provided a glimpse of this new deal during the Bloomberg Media Screentime conference. While discussing the partnership, Perry remained secretive and did not disclose many details.
“He talks too much,” Perry joked. “I’ll wait for them to announce it. But yeah, Netflix has been an incredible partner to work with, and so is Amazon. It’s been really, really, really incredible, and that’s all I’ll say about it.”
Perry has already produced five films for Netflix, including “A Fall From Grace,” “A Madea Homecoming,” “A Jazzman’s Blues,” “Six Triple Eight,” and “Mea Culpa.”
Perry’s latest collaboration with Netflix is distinct from his four-picture contract with Amazon Studios. Amazon has already unveiled the initial two films as part of that arrangement: “Black, White & Blue,” and “Divorce in the Black.”
In 2021, Perry brought back his iconic character, Mabel “Madea” Simmons, in the comedy film titled “A Madea Homecoming.” The movie enjoyed a successful run on Netflix, spending four weeks in the global top 10 list and accumulating over 1 billion minutes of viewership during its first week of streaming.
“I was done with Madea, completely done with it,” Perry said. “But as I’ve been looking at the state of the world … and the amount of joy and laughter that it brought to so many people, that’s what I think is missing. We need that laughter and that joy.”
