Tyler, The Creator says he’s embarrassed by his fans after they booed #Drake while on stage at Creator’s annual Camp Flog Gnaw festival.
On Sunday, Drizzy made a surprise appearance at the festival, and before ending his set, he addressed the crowd saying, “You know, Imma tell you, like I said, I’m here for you tonight. If you want me to keep going, I will keep going,” he said, before being met by audible boos as well as some audience members shouting out “no,” telling him to go home.
The rapper reportedly ended his performance 20 minutes early. “It’s been love. I love ya. I go by the name of Drake, thank you for having me,” Drake said before leaving the stage. Drake is, respectively, one of the biggest artists in the music industry, which is why many were confused by the boos and rejection. It turned out that the crowd was anticipating #FrankOcean to perform next. “We want Frank,” people chanted. “Fans at camp flog gnaw were expecting that Frank ocean was gonna be the surprise guest headliner… they got drake instead.. safe to say… they rather Frank ocean,” Complex’s DJ Akademiks wrote on Twitter, alongside a clip of Drake’s exchange with the audience.
Fans’ reaction to Drake made it to the internet, where many expressed their objection to the rapper’s treatment. “YOO DRIZZY MF DRAKE just performed at camp flog gnaw.. but the crowd wanted frank & booed him off stage, y’all a different breed fr…” wrote one Twitter user. On Monday, Tyler addressed the incident, saying he was “embarrassed by fans.”
“I thought bringing one of the biggest artists on the f—ing planet to a music festival was fire! But flipside, a lil tone-deaf knowing the specific crowd it drew. Some created a narrative in their head and acted out like assholes when it didn’t come true, and I don’t f— with that. This n— did feel no ways! Song is beautiful. Also, mostly everyone was having a great time, those s—s in the front area were the ones being mad rude, which, I can see why, but, nah, f— that, y’all represented me and Flog to my guest and made us look sooo entitled and trash. That s— was like mob mentality and cancel culture in real life and I think that s— is f—ing trash.”
He continued, “Thank you, Aubrey … He really did that for me, and I appreciate it because he did not have to come at all. See our worlds come together was so great in theory. Again, thank you, Drake. I’m f—ing pissed ‘Hotline Bling’ was next — that’s my f—ing s—.”
