Late last year, reports revealed that “Being Mary Jane” star Gabrielle Union was being fired from her gig as a judge on the forthcoming season of “America’s Got Talent,” alongside Julianne Hough and Howie Mandel.
The departure came after Union reported a “toxic culture” backstage & during tapings of the show, including alleged racist jokes and accounts of sexism.
Since then, Tyra banks, who was also a former judge on the hit show from 2017 to 2018, spoke out in support of Union and her vulnerability. ”What I love about what she did is she was very vulnerable. .. I thought it was beautiful, how she wasn’t speaking in anger, she was speaking in pain, ‘I’m trying to get through this… And I’m crying’. I just thought that was really beautiful because a lot of the times in entertainment, you have to put up this front— I’m strong, and I’m this, and I was wrong. She was so vulnerable,” Tyra told USA Today, later adding that she wasn’t really “immersed in the culture” of the show.
