Tyra Banks says her new body positive mini-series will “expand and redefine the definition of beauty.”
Banks has built an empire off her modeling career, and she’s now focusing on her advocacy as a body-positive leader by executive producing docu-series called “Beauty.” The new show will highlight various issues in the beauty industry with a mission to “break down barriers” and “challenge traditional notions.”
Banks has dedicated her career to showing all spectrums of beauty. “As I look into the future, I see radical changes in both how people ‘attain beauty,’ and how the world perceives beauty,” Banks said in a statement. “Our docu-series aims to expand and redefine the definition of beauty as we know it, challenging why we accept certain beauty parameters and reject others, and examining the beliefs behind those judgments.” The multi-part series will premiere on Quibi, an entertainment and streaming platform that is set to launch in 2020.
Back in May, Banks explained she would be changing her name to “BanX” in her cover story for Sports Illustrated. The 45-year-old said the “X” signifies her resurgence into the modeling industry and “X-ing out cookie-cutter beauty,” Banks told SI.
“Mononyms are exciting in the industry,” she explained. “But usually models use their first names, like Iman. I want to flip the script and go by my last name. I’m taking something familiar and making it new. I’m wiser now and thicker.” She continued, “BanX is me, but she’s also every woman. BanX represents rebirth, and that beauty boundaries only exist to be broken.”
