The Miami Dolphins‘ season ended Sunday with a disappointing 32-20 loss to the New York Jets. The Denver Broncos eliminated the Dolphins from playoff contention after a dominant win against most of the Kansas City Chiefs’ second team. The Dolphins finished below .500 with an 8-9 record.

A season plagued by injuries and internal turmoil defined this Miami team, with wide receiver Tyreek Hill seeing a steady decline in all of his numbers. This marked the first time in five years that Hill didn’t surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season, finishing with 956. He also saw 50 fewer targets due to injuries sustained by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
Hill chose not to re-enter the game when it became clear that the outcome wouldn’t determine Miami’s playoff fate. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel later claimed Hill gave up on the team in the second half. While Tua’s health was uncontrollable—he likely wouldn’t have been available for a wild-card game due to a lingering hip injury—Hill’s decision not to play has reportedly not gone over well in the locker room.
After Sunday’s game, Hill voiced his frustration during media availability, suggesting he might explore other options this offseason. Addressing his decision not to rejoin the game, Hill said:
“This is the first time I haven’t been in the playoffs, man. So I just got to do what’s best for me and my family. If that’s here or wherever the case may be, I’m finna open that door for myself. I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I gotta do what’s best for my career because I’m too much of a competitor to just be out there.”
Hill’s current contract is tradeable, and he remains under contract for two more seasons. His cap hit will be $27.7 million next year and a staggering $51.9 million in 2027. Any team trading for Hill will need to weigh these figures heavily.
On First Take this morning, Stephen A. Smith didn’t hold back, addressing Hill’s comments before NFL alumni Marcus Spears and Shannon Sharpe weighed in.
“Oh, hell no, stay your ass right there,” Smith said, dismissing Hill’s reasoning about prioritizing his family.
“This same Tyreek Hill that got his bag now, restructured—I don’t wanna hear about your family,” Smith said. “Your family is when it comes to your money, not the game. That’s you.”
Hill seemed to double down on his stance, posting a photoshopped image of his face onto the viral picture of Antonio Brown exiting his last NFL game, making it his profile picture on X (formerly Twitter).
The turmoil surrounding Hill’s trade request even before exit interviews highlights how quickly things have unraveled in Miami. It will be interesting to see what key players and decision-makers have to say about Hill’s actions in the coming days.
