Friday, the House of Representatives voted to ban assault-style weapons, sending the bill to the Senate.
The Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 legislation was passed with a final vote of 217-213, with two Republican lawmakers voting in support of the bill and five Democrats opposing it.
“Our nation has watched in unspeakable horror as assault weapons have been used in massacre after massacre in communities across the country,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif said on the floor during debate on the bill. “And disturbingly, so many of these mass shootings have targeted our precious children, in our schools, at the movies, at the malls and throughout our communities.”
The legislation calls for prohibiting the sale, manufacture, transfer or import of various semiautomatic assault weapons, semiautomatic pistols and semiautomatic shotguns, depending on their features, The Hill reports.
Although the bill received bipartisan support in the House, it is not expected to advance in the Senate due to widespread Republican opposition.
