Uber released its safety report on Thursday, stating that they received 5,981 reports of sexual assault between 2017 and 2018, according to Fox 5 News. There were 464 reports of rape within those reports.
Uber has been withholding this report for nearly a year after a CNN investigation reported approximately 103 Uber drivers had been accused of sexually assaulting and abusing passengers within the last four years. The drivers were arrested, wanted, or have been named in civil suits in relation to the allegations. It was the first time that actual numbers were revealed on the ongoing safety issues.
Uber and Lyft have been facing lawsuits related to safety issues around the nation. The withholding of vital information on the number of issues reported involving drivers has been a complaint made in various lawsuits against the cab app. Lyft has since said they will be releasing their safety report by the end of 2019.
