Bill Belichick has officially signed his contract with the University of North Carolina to become their new head coach, and it was revealed this week that his first nationally televised game will be on Labor Day against TCU. The headline matchup is set for Chapel Hill.
The “Belichick effect” is already making waves, and the university is determined to get its return on investment. Contract details show that the legendary NFL coach will earn a $10 million annual salary through 2029. Of that amount, $1 million will come from the football program, while the remaining $9 million is classified as “supplemental income.”
Belichick also has several bonus opportunities this season. He will earn a $750,000 bonus if he leads the Tar Heels to their first-ever College Football Playoff (CFP) appearance. Additionally, a Top 25 finish in the AP poll will net him a $250,000 bonus, while securing a spot in an elite bowl game will trigger a $350,000 bonus.
But money aside, what’s clear is that Chapel Hill has officially become “Chapel Bill.” Belichick has been active on the recruiting trail, assembling a roster that has fans excited for what’s to come. So far, he’s landed seven transfers through the portal, most notably Purdue transfer quarterback Ryan Browne.
Belichick has time to develop a competitive product within the Tar Heels organization, but the national media will be watching closely to see if he can deliver success early in his tenure at UNC.
