United Airlines to Slash Miles for Millions While Boosting Rewards for Credit Card Users

New MileagePlus Rules Lock Top Benefits and Basic Economy Rewards Behind Co-Branded Cards

United Airlines is flipping the script on its loyalty program, making a co-branded credit card the essential “key” to earning and redeeming miles.

Starting April 2, the carrier will roll out a massive restructuring of its MileagePlus program that creates a sharp divide between cardholders and everyone else. Under the new guidelines, travelers without a United credit or debit card will see their earning rates cut significantly, while those who carry the card can earn up to double the miles per dollar. This strategic shift is designed to drive more users toward United’s financial products, which have become a multi-billion dollar pillar for the company.

“MileagePlus is designed to reward loyalty to United, and our best customers deserve the best benefits in the industry,” said Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer.

The overhaul introduces several “cardmember-only” perks that fundamentally change how the program functions. For the first time, United cardholders will receive an automatic discount of at least 10% on every award flight they book with miles, a figure that jumps to 15% for those with Premier elite status. Additionally, the airline is granting general cardholders access to exclusive “Saver Award” seats in its premium Polaris business class, a benefit previously reserved for top-tier elite flyers. By dangling these discounts and premium access, United is effectively forcing a choice, get the card or pay more in miles.

Nocella doubled down on this approach, stating, “The most rewarding way to fly United is as a MileagePlus member, and the best way to get the most value from the MileagePlus program is to have one of our credit or debit cards.”

The most aggressive changes hit the airline’s budget-conscious travelers. United announced that general MileagePlus members will no longer earn any miles on basic economy tickets unless they hold a qualifying co-branded card. This means that for millions of casual flyers, the cheapest ticket will now offer zero loyalty rewards.

Even on standard tickets, the base earning rate for non-cardholders is being reduced from five miles per dollar to just three. As Nocella put it, “MileagePlus members can now earn more miles faster with a United card – and every one of those miles will go further with our always-on award ticket discounts.”

As these changes take effect in April, the airline plans to use its app and website to highlight the “missing” savings for non-cardholders, showing discounted award prices to everyone as a persistent nudge to apply for a card. While current cardholders will see an immediate boost in their earning potential, with some 1K members earning as much as 17 miles per dollar, the casual flyer is being left with significantly less.
