It’s the year of Usher!
The eight-time Grammer winner and R&B icon is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s BET Awards, the network announced on Thursday.
The coveted award, which has previously gone to music legends like Prince, Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, and Lionel Richie, salutes “special achievements and distinguished public service” among industry trailblazers “who have powerfully shifted culture and the entertainment industry,” according to a press release. This year, Usher has the pleasure of joining his fellow recipients as BET celebrates his “ever-growing musical legacy.”
“The relationship between BET and Usher spans decades, from his multiple appearances on 106 & Park, to most recently winning the Entertainer of the Year trophy at the 55th NAACP Image Awards,” said Connie Orlando, BET EVP, Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy. “From his chart-topping hits, electrifying performances and unforgettable vocals to his signature moves and sound, Usher continues to stand on culture, setting new standards for the music industry and Black excellence. We look forward to creating an amazing lineup to pay tribute to our global icon.”
A roster of surprise guests, who will be announced later, will take the stage during “culture’s biggest night” to celebrate Usher’s defining artistry. Already-announced performers for the night include GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, and Victoria Monét.
In addition to his Lifetime Achievement Award, Usher has also been nominated for four BET Awards this year, including Album of the Year (Coming Home), Best Male R&B/pop Artist, and Best Collaboration and Best Video (“Good Good” feat. Summer Walker and 21 Savage).
Usher’s latest honor follows a tremendous run in 2024 that included his record-breaking Super Bowl halftime headlining performance, the release of his ninth studio album, Coming Home, the 20th anniversary of his diamond-certified Confessions album, and the announcement of his upcoming Past Present Future tour—all of which come after his ultra-successful Las Vegas residency that concluded in December.
This year’s BET Awards airs Sunday, June 30.
