Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller Makes History As First Woman To Play In A Power Five Game

Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller is the first woman in college football history to play in a Power Five game when she kicked off to start the second half.

In their 41-0 loss to Missouri, the senior goalkeeper on the soccer team kicked off using a holder instead of a tee and launched a low kick to the 35-yard line. It was her only offering in the game.

Fuller joined the football team this week, just one week after helping the soccer team win the SEC championship. Due to COVID-19 protocols and restrictions, Commodores football coach Derek Mason had few other options for the game against Missouri.

“I’m not about making statements,” Mason said. “This was out of necessity.”

Fuller practiced with the team this week before traveling to Missouri for the game. She sported number 32 on her jersey, the same number on her soccer jersey.

“Honestly, it’s just so exciting, and the fact that I can represent like the little girls out there who wanted to do this or thought about playing football or any sport really and it encourages them to be able to step out and do something big like this,” she said after the game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Fuller made it clear she would love to continue helping the team if necessary.
