Kerry Lathan, the man injured in the fatal shooting of Nipsey Hussle, is expected to be released from custody after officials arrested him on a parole violation.
On March 31, after meeting with Hussle to retrieve clothes from his Marathon Clothing store upon reconnecting with his family, Lathan was hit in the back near his spine. Lathan was immediately hospitalized, treated and temporarily confined to a wheelchair as a result of his injuries. Less than two weeks later, police arrested Lathan at his halfway house for a probation violation, accusing him of associating with a “known gang member,” which in his case was Neighborhood Nip.
Lathan’s arrest sparked widespread backlash, as many reiterated their calls for probation and parole reform. In fact, even Meek Mill, whose adult life has been plagued by probation violations, expressed his concerns and experiences with the botched system.
But now, according to ABC, less than a week after the controversial arrest, Lathan is expected to be released. Apparently, police initially made the arrest based on Hussle’s affiliation to the Rolling 60s Crips, but after learning of Hussle’s contributions to the community with many, including the Mayor of L.A., describing the late rapper and activist as a “pillar of the community, Lathan’s charges were dropped.
Now, the Department of Corrections is working to get Lathan released.
