San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama is already bringing in big bucks.
One fan is so supportive of the newcomer that they dropped $762,000 on his debut game jersey. The large purchase happened on Tuesday at the Sotheby’s auction. The price is well over quadruple what experts expected the Wembanyama jersey to bring in.
Early projections estimated the jersey would go for $100,000.
The unidentified buyer got an exclusive piece of sports memorabilia, as the item could soar in value over the years, going for even more money in years to come as Wembanyama’s career progresses.
The rookie wore the jersey during his first game last month. Thus far, Wembanyama has played in 14 games, averaging 18.6 points per game as well as 9.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, one steal, and 2.6 blocks per TMZ. The 19-year-old was the most impressive star at the 2023 NBA Draft, becoming the No. 1 overall pick.
Wembanyama’s jersey is the latest player’s team gear to sell big at the Sotheby’s auction. The soccer shirt worn by Diego Maradona during his 1986 quarterfinal match sold for $9.3 million at Sotheby’s in London in May 2022. Lionel Messi’s World Cup jerseys are expected to fetch millions at auction.
While the buyer of Wembanyama’s jersey remains unknown, they are likely to be a fixture at many games moving forward, as we’re sure they can afford to do so.
