The heartwarming bond between “Thanksgiving Grandma” Wanda Dench and her accidental friend-turned-family Jamal Hinton has captivated millions since their story first went viral. This year, Dench, 67, is ready to open her heart in a new way—seeking a romantic connection inspired by none other than The Golden Bachelor.
“I don’t like being alone, and I miss my husband,” Dench shared in an interview with The Arizona Republic on Tuesday, November 26. “I wish he was still here, but that’s not reality.”
Despite her recent breast cancer diagnosis, Dench confirmed that she and Hinton will continue their cherished Thanksgiving tradition this year, just as they have every year since their unlikely friendship began. However, she hopes that by next Thanksgiving, she’ll have someone new at the table—a romantic partner. Watching The Golden Bachelor gave her hope that love can find her again, even in her senior years.
In an October 16 post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Hinton shared Dench’s optimism: “After watching The Golden Bachelor last year, that gave me hope that I could still find love in my senior years. So continue getting your checkups and continue to live YOUR life!”
“The show gave me hope that I could start dating, and maybe find a second love,” Dench told The Arizona Republic. “It wouldn’t be the same, but it would still be genuine.”
Dench and Hinton’s friendship began in 2016 after an accidental text message led to an invitation to Thanksgiving dinner. Their story went viral and turned them into a symbol of kindness and connection, with thousands of people liking and sharing their annual holiday photos on social media.
This year marks the ninth Thanksgiving they’ll spend together. Over the years, Dench has faced significant challenges, including the loss of her husband Lonnie in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications. Most recently, she completed chemotherapy and is preparing to begin radiation treatment following this year’s holiday celebration.
Through it all, Hinton has been a steadfast source of support. “I feel blessed to have him in my life,” Dench said. “He’s changed my life for the good.”
