Jamal Hinton just gave us an update on his viral “Thanksgiving Grandma,” Wanda Dench.
If you don’t remember the heartwarming story, Wanda accidentally texted Jamal in 2016, thinking he was her grandson. That random invite turned into a Thanksgiving tradition that’s still going strong.
Recently, Hinton took to X to update everyone on Wanda’s health. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and has been going through chemotherapy.
In a heartfelt message, Wanda opened up about her journey, saying that while she thought she was done with mammograms at 65, a scan for bronchitis led to the discovery of a mass in her breast. Thankfully, Wanda’s been receiving excellent care, and her message was full of strength and positivity, encouraging everyone—no matter their age—to keep living life to the fullest.
Wanda also gave a shoutout to The Golden Bachelor, which inspired her to believe in finding love even later in life. Despite everything she’s faced, she’s determined to keep smiling and living her best life. We’re all rooting for her, and we hope to see her and Jamal together for another iconic Thanksgiving selfie this year.
With Wanda’s husband, Lonnie, passing away in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, the Thanksgiving tradition has meant so much to both their families.
Stay tuned for their inspiring story, “The Thanksgiving Text,” coming to Netflix soon.
