A search and rescue team found a Virginia woman who had been missing for eight days sitting on a tree stump singing “Amazing Grace.”
According to officials, on May 17, 69-year-old Aletha Gee Walton went missing. She was last seen inside her home in the Simplicity area two days prior. When her family learned that she was missing, they immediately called the police. Her family said Walton suffers from dementia.
After searching for some time, Walton was found Monday morning about 0.8 miles from her home in a thick forest. When she was found, Walton was reportedly singing “Amazing Grace.” CBS News reports that there are no details on how the woman got there; she was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
In a statement, Sheriff Tony Epps said he was pleased with the results of the search.” This has been incredibly challenging, but we are thrilled to be able to provide the family the best possible outcome,” said Epps CBS News reports. “I have spoken with the family and they relayed their appreciation to everyone involved in the search for their loved one.”
Walton’s family says they were saddened by the entire ordeal but were overjoyed to know Walton was found. “Amazing Grace. God was with her the whole time,” said Sandra Knight, Walton’s sister.
