The MTV Video Music Awards is in hot water again for missing the mark on highlighting the iconic musical contributions of #MissyElliott.
Last year, viewers were referring to the awards show as “empty,” “extremely boring” and “beyond saving.” These reactions stem from several different feelings, but most resort from Elliott not being honored with the #MichaelJackson Video Vanguard Award. The lifetime achievement award is given to artists who have dominated not only the music arena but are also known for their influential music videos.
Last week it was announced that #JenniferLopez would be taking the stage to accept the prize. But Elliott fans weren’t shocked by the news as Elliott had hinted that she wasn’t even considered, back in July. The rapper tweeted, “I’m sorry to say I don’t think I am even on the list.” Feeling some of the backlash, Lopez made an effort to clear the air by saying her two picks for next year’s recipients are Missy and #LadyGaga. After hearing #JLo’s shout out Missy tweeted, “Congratulations to J. Lo smash up the stage. I am humbly grateful for the shout out too.”

The lack of acknowledgment Elliott has received has sparked people to create a campaign asking that Elliott be honored with the award – a campaign that has been active for years.

#Missy is a four-time Grammy-winning artist who has given us some of the most classic songs and music videos (that we still know every word to as soon as the first beat drops). Some of her most notable hits are “One Minute Man,” “Gossip Folks,” Supa Dupa Fly,” Work It,” Get Ur Freak On,” “Hot Boyz” and the list goes on.
