Volleyball Coach Began Sleeping With Student After He Hit Her Car

An Ohio high school volleyball coach has been charged with sexually assaulting a student after he hit her car.

Brycelyn Haughey of Toledo was arrested on December 15th following a lengthy investigation into the September 2020 incident. The 22-year-old encountered the 17-year-old teenager when he mistakenly backed into her vehicle in the Green Mountain Garwin High School parking lot. The boy agreed to pay for the damages, and the two exchanged contact information.

After the minor accident, Haughey allegedly asked the student his age, to which he replied truthfully and confirmed that he was a junior. The coach responded, “close enough.” The two then began texting, but the interactions had nothing to do with the car repairs. Instead, Haughey sent flirtatious messages, and soon the two became involved in a sexual relationship. Their first encounter took place on September 25th inside Haughey’s home. When the teen arrived, a girl younger than him was already present, and the two began drinking together before he and the coach had sex, though it is unclear if the younger female was abused as well.

Haughey sent multiple racy photos to the teenager, including at least one fully nude one. Another student reported seeing a naked picture of her as well.

In October of this year, Green Mountain Garwin School District Superintendent Kym Stein contacted police to report the incident, claiming that the former school district administration had overlooked the illicit affair. Haughley left her job as a coach in September 2021 and began working as a preschool and special education paraprofessional at the nearby Tama County School District. She resigned from that position on the day of her arrest on December 15th.

Haughley has been charged with four counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. She is currently out on bond.
