Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation Wednesday following her loss in the 2024 presidential race to President-elect Donald Trump. Speaking from her alma mater, Howard University, Harris delivered a powerful and heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude to her supporters and reinforcing her dedication to the causes at the heart of her campaign.
“My heart is full today,” Harris began, acknowledging the disappointment while emphasizing hope for America’s future. “The outcome of this election is not what we wanted, not what we fought for, not what we voted for. But hear me when I say, the light of America’s promise will always burn bright as long as we never give up and as long as we keep fighting.”
Harris thanked her family, President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden, Governor Tim Walz, and her campaign team, reflecting on their efforts to build a broad, inclusive coalition. “Over the 107 days of this campaign, we have been intentional about building community and coalitions, bringing people together from every walk of life,” she said.
Addressing the transition of power, Harris announced that she had personally congratulated Trump and assured him of a peaceful transfer of power. “A fundamental principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the results,” she emphasized. While conceding the race, Harris declared her ongoing dedication to fighting for freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all people. “I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign…the ideals that reflect America at our best.”
The vice president also spoke to the challenges facing the nation, reaffirming her commitment to protecting women’s rights, combating gun violence, defending democracy, and ensuring equal justice for all. “We will continue to wage this fight in the voting booth, in the courts, and in the public square…by always using our strength to lift people up, to fight for the dignity that all people deserve.”
To young people watching, Harris offered encouragement and hope, acknowledging their disappointment but urging them to keep striving for a better world. “You have power…and don’t you ever listen when anyone tells you something is impossible because it has never been done before.”
Harris concluded with a message of resilience and unity, drawing on the strength of those who have overcome adversity. “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars,” she said, encouraging the nation to be a beacon of hope and optimism. “Let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant billion of stars.”
