The Wades Open Up About Unique Journey To Parenthood and Backlash After New Baby’s Birth: “Everyone Started Talking About Why She Acting Like She Just Had a Baby”

Last month, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade announced the arrival of their baby girl Kaavia James Union Wade via surrogate, and now, the two are opening up about their unique journey in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“You’re finally a mother at 46,” Oprah said in the new special, “Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby,” which is set to air on Dec. 8 on OWN.

The Wades wed in August of 2014, but for the last few years had struggled with infertility, which the actress opened up about in her 2017 memoir, “We’re Going To Need More Wine.”

“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant,” she said, revealing she “had eight or nine miscarriages.” “I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

But, even after receiving the greatest gift with the struggles of infertility behind her, the actress faced a new struggle, which came at the hands of the internet.

“Everyone started talking about why she acting like she just had a baby,” Wade said, as Oprah asked Union to explain the photos, which showed Union in a hospital bed with her newborn.

“I’m already getting choked up. It’s still hard to let go,” the actress said, in regards to her inability to carry the baby on her own.

Now, baby Kaavia joins a crew of Wades, as Union’s first child and Wade’s first daughter, with siblings, Zaire Blessing Dwyane, Zion Malachi Airamis, Xavier Zechariah and his cousin, Dahveon Morris.
