Although Paula Deen tearfully appeared on the Today Show Wednesday morning, more and more brands are following suit and disassociating themselves from the former Food Network chef. Just hours after it was announced Caesars closed all four of Paula Deen’s restaurants that operate on their property, Walmart has announced that they will no longer be selling her popular cookware.
“We will not place new orders beyond those already committed,” Wal-Mart spokeswoman Danit Marquardt said in a statement. “We will work with suppliers to address existing inventories and agreements.”
The decision follows controversy stemming from a (white) employee suing Paula Deen and her restaurant for a hostile environment. Aside from the use of racial slurs which Paula has admitted to, the employee makes claims that Paula Deen treated her African American employees unfairly, having darker colored employees only work in the back (away from customers), refer to a black cook as “my little monkey” and even suggested that her black waitstaff dress as slaves for a “plantation themed wedding” reception. Besides the racial discrimination, sexual harassment and porn on work computers were also brought up agains Paula Deen and her brother.
Walmart and Caesars join Smithfield Foods this week in quitting their partnership with the celebrity chef. QVC has announced that they will review whether or not they will continue to sell Paula Deen’s cookware as well.
