If you’ve recently purchased Great Value Chicken Broth at Walmart, it’s time to check your pantry. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall in December for more than 2,000 cases of the product due to a packaging issue that could lead to spoilage. The recall affects family-sized, 48-ounce cartons of the chicken broth produced by Tree House Foods and sold in 242 Walmart locations across nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
The affected cartons are identified with Batch (Lot) Code 98F09234, Retail Unit UPC 007874206684, Case UPC 078742066844, and a Best if Used By Date of March 25, 2026. Consumers who purchased the recalled product are urged to discard it immediately or return it to the store for a full refund.
Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA warns that bacterial spoilage is difficult to detect, as contaminated food may show no changes in taste, smell, or appearance. Consuming spoiled products can lead to foodborne illnesses, including gastrointestinal symptoms. A Walmart spokesperson emphasized, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted products from select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
This recall is one of several recent incidents affecting Walmart products. On December 31, the FDA also issued a recall for Braga Fresh’s Marketside Broccoli Florets due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The ready-to-eat 12-ounce broccoli packages were sold in Walmart stores across 20 states.
