Rapper and producer Warren G recently shared some interesting information about his struggles obtaining music royalties. During his recent visit to the R&B Money podcast, Warren G sat down with hosts Tank and J.Valentine to discuss music and his journey in the industry.
While the conversation was entertaining, one of the standout moments came after Warren G made a shocking revelation about his royalty checks. According to the rapper, he has not received his checks for his contributions to the ‘Above The Rim’ soundtrack. The project featured his popular ‘Regulate’ song and roughly 4 million copies. Warren G claims he hasn’t seen a single royalty check despite its success.
“We did the ‘Above the Rim,’ it came out. ‘Regulate,’ ‘Set It Off,’ the whole thing sold like 4 million. I never got a royalty check from that. Never got a royalty check,” he stated. “I get them now, but I never get them from ‘Above the Rim.’”
Additionally, Warren G also opened up about royalty payments from Death Row Record Label. He mentioned that the payouts are rather small and feel more like an insult than a compensation.
“Actually, ‘Indo Smoke’…sh*t, I ain’t seen no royalty check from that. That’s Sony. They send me statements and sh*t, but there’s no description or nothing. It be like $1. N*gga, are you kidding me? Don’t send this sh*t to me,” he added.
Although he is battling these financial discrepancies, Warren G admits he isn’t too worried about the situation because it’s too much of a hassle and brushes off the issue to avoid the stress.
“I’m like, ‘this sh*t ain’t nothing but a headache,’ so I be like, ‘f*ck it, I ain’t tripping.’ But that ‘I ain’t tripping’ is ‘I should be tripping.’”
