The Washington Football Team announced Wednesday that fans are banned from donning anything Native American inspired while at the stadium.
This means no more Native American headdresses or face paint while attending games at FedEx Field this season.
The team announced to WFT fans in an email. “We are excited to welcome everyone back wearing their Burgundy & Gold,” the team wrote. “However, Native American-inspired ceremonial headdresses or face paint may no longer be worn to the stadium.”
The change is another step for the team in trying to distance itself from its controversial former name. The team is set to play the 2021 season known as “Football Team,” with a new name set to be announced early next year.
Team president Jason wright said the new name would not be announced until the team has decided on a new logo and rebranding. The trademark process will also need to be complete before the new name is made public.
