With COVID-19 changing our lives day by day, many organizations and businesses are figuring out new ways to move forward with planned events.
According to Variety, YouTube is partnering with 20 popular film festivals, including Sundance, Cannes, Tribeca, Venice, Berlin International Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival for ‘We Are One: A Global Film Festival.’
The festival will take place from May 29 to June 7, and will be free for fans interested in viewing. However, fans are encouraged to make donations in support of the World Health Organization and local organizations globally.
At this time, it’s unclear what films will be chosen for the festival, but cinema fans will be happy to know the festival will be ad-free while they showcase feature films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy, and even panel discussions.
Popular music and film festival SXSW, however, will not be participating as they’re partnering with Amazon to stream 39 films, shorts, and series this week, the outlet reports.
“We Are One: A Global Film Festival unites curators, artists, and storytellers to entertain and provide relief to audiences worldwide,” said the head of Tribeca Enterprises and Tribeca Film Festival Jane Rosenthal in a statement. “In working with our extraordinary festival partners and YouTube, we hope that everyone gets a taste of what makes each festival so unique and appreciates the art and power of film.”
While these festivals are partnering with YouTube for this global fest for cinema fans, there’s still hope the festivals can still take place in-person in the coming months.
“We are proud to join with our partner festivals to spotlight truly extraordinary films and talent, allowing audiences to experience both the nuances of storytelling from around the world and the artistic personalities of each festival,” Cannes Film Festival President Pierre Lescure and Frémaux said in a prepared statement.
Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s chief business officer, boasted that the 10-day digital film festival is “an event that’s never been done before and we’re proud to be the home for this fantastic content that is free to fans around the world.”
