The Weeknd has been doing a great deal of viral promotion for his latest album, After Hours. The Canadian singer has made several red carpet and award show appearances. He also released several new visuals. However, fans have been shocked to see the singer’s face wholly bandaged.
The Weeknd finally removed the bandages in the visual for his single, “Save Your Tears.” The shock factor skyrocketed when the singer appeared with a dramatically surgically-enhanced face.
Before his Super Bowl Performace, The pop star sat down with Variety. During the interview, The Weekend finally addressed the elephant in the room.
“The significance of the entire head bandages reflects Hollywood celebrities’ absurd culture and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated. What started as just “a terrible night” in Las Vegas in the album’s first music video, “Blinding Lights,” becomes “a progression, and we watch The Character’s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on,” The Weekend said.
The Weekend appeared In a new Super Bowl ad completely unbandaged. When asked about his motives concerning his appearance while promoting his biggest album to date, he replied
“I suppose you could take that being attractive isn’t important to me, but a compelling narrative is. Why not play with the character and the artist and let those lines blur and move around? It seems those lines are even starting to blur for the artist when asked if he was in character right now. I don’t know. I’d have to ask him,” The Weekend replied.
