Wendy Williams Says Babies & Relationships Will Stunt A Woman’s Career Growth (Agree or Disagree?)

Wendy Williams recently sat down with FORBES where she discussed career women and how marriage, relationships and children effect them differently than men.

“My suggestion to women is always…use your entire 20s to work your behind off in your career… And then think about meeting that guy,” cautions Wendy. “‘Cause we’re the ones that lose in marriage. Not men.” She goes on to say  “It is difficult for men to accept really successful career women. Whether it be that we out-earn them or that our name is brighter than theirs.  I also feel like marriage and babies stunt a woman’s growth career-wise…Once you get married and have kids, you can’t do all the things that you used to do and maintain this important precious thing that you built as a family.”

Shonda Rhimes even touched on the subject during her  Commencement Speech at Dartmouth  over the summer.  “As a very successful woman, a single mother of three, who constantly gets asked the question “How do you do it all?” For once I am going to answer that question with 100 percent honesty here for you now. Because it’s just us. Because it’s our fireside chat. Because somebody has to tell you the truth. Shonda, how do you do it all? The answer is this: I don’t.”

So what do you think? Can a woman truly have it all?

There aren’t many times I will actually say this but for once, I agree with Wendy. Granted, every woman is different and every career path is carved out uniquely, but you better believe children and relationships stunt your progression — at least a little.

Emotionally and Physically women are taken out of commission for weeks, maybe months. But have you ever noticed that while you’re working excessively hard to make a relationship work, your career is waiting on the sidelines, untouched? It happens every time. It’s so hard to have both.

As far as children, it’s most important to have a strong support system and be ready to get as little “free time” as possible. Know that parenting and work will take up all of your time for a long time. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, or not reaching a goal when you planned to. Relationships and Children do stunt career growth but they don’t STOP it.
