Wendy Williams was placed in the memory care unit of her assisted living facility, but it wasn’t solely due to her dementia diagnosis—rather, it stemmed from an incident where she was reportedly served alcohol and became intoxicated at the facility’s restaurant.
A staff member at the facility, who has interacted with Williams frequently since her arrival eight months ago, told TMZ that she was originally housed on the third floor, where residents had more freedom to come and go. However, things changed after she visited the building’s restaurant and bar for lunch.
According to the source, Williams spent an extended amount of time drinking at the restaurant and ended up intoxicated. When supervisors found out, they were reportedly furious that staff had served her alcohol. Shortly after the incident, they decided to relocate Williams to the fifth-floor memory care unit, where she would have restricted access to the rest of the building, including the restaurant.
At the time, no rooms were available in the memory unit, so while the facility waited for a space to open up, Williams remained on the third floor under strict supervision. Employees were stationed outside her room to prevent her from accessing the restaurant. Staff allegedly told Williams that the restaurant was “under construction” to deter her from attempting to go back.
A few days later, a room in the memory unit became available, and Williams was moved. As seen in the recent TMZ documentary Where Is Wendy Williams?, she said she had only been outside twice in 30 days for dental appointments.
Despite her placement in the memory unit, the facility staffer told TMZ that Williams’ memory remains intact. “Wendy doesn’t have good and bad days. She’s the same all the time,” the source said, adding, “You can tell her something today, and two weeks later, she’ll remember it. Her memory is fine.”
