Ballerific Sports: What Does Being Black Enough Actually Mean ANYWAY?

Russell Wilson, shots have been fired. You have just been put on notice, YOU ARE NOT BLACK ENOUGH! I guess that I am not black enough either. Maybe I need to poll some people and find out what being “black enough” truly is.

Most if not all people should be offended by this, why should someone have to live up to a stereotype of what being black truly is. Why is a certain behavior expected of you based on your color?

What does it mean to be “black enough?”  Why can’t people just be people and not terms, especially when it comes to race? When it comes to being black in America, or any other place for that matter, there are not a lot of positive stereotypes associated with being black other than we are amazing athletes. As individuals we should work hard to strive to be ourselves and dispel stereotypes by presenting ourselves in the best positive light. At least that is what I try to do.

I don’t need to list the stereotypes, black people already know how we are portrayed on television. To me, television is of of the biggest brain washers of them all.  Most people really think that what they see on television is true and real.  The media and news does a great job of portraying black people in the worst aspects of life. There is no stories about the good that we do, only the negative things are talked about and highlighted. These aspects of television promote and increase the divide regarding the races by creating a mass hysteria and an irrational fear of black people.

No, I do not watch reality TV. First of all, that’s not my reality, secondly I refuse to watch bad behavior. If you notice people are acting out their favorite reality shows in real life. People are thinking that the best way to deal with conflict is to speak with your fist.  The best way to resolve conflict is to not have it and treat people in a respectable manner. It is very sad to see that common courtesy and basic manners (please, thank you, excuse me) are becoming extinct words.

When it comes to conflict: Just because you yell the longest and loudest does not necessarily mean you are right. Nothing good ever comes from physical violence.

My friends made me watch “Love and Hip Hop: ATL” and I swear I needed a brain transplant because I lost  so many brain cells as my brain tried to process that SILLY GARBAGE!!

The way this society works is people see Stevie J, Joseline , and Mimi and perceives that that’s Rachel acts because my skin color is the same shade as theirs. Most people are not intelligent enough to realize that ALL black women do not act this way. Most people do believe that ALL black women act that way b because this is what is being presented to them on television.  I am not even going to get on the negative serotypes of black men, that would be a dissertation and I want this post to be short.

Personally, I don’t feel the need to be black enough. My skin color is a physical trait. My head, my heart, and my actions define who I really am. All I want to be person enough, and my skin color has nothing to do with being a kind, caring, and compassionate human being.

People need to do better and be better, and it starts with the thing between our two ears.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Oscar Wilde
