A white couple has been arrested after a video showed them attacking a Black woman who worked at a Connecticut hotel.
The attack was caught on video that’s since gone viral, showing Crystal Caldwell, 59, being beaten by the couple.
Caldwell was working at the front desk on June 26 at the Quality Inn in Mystic, Connecticut, when guest Phillip Sarner, 39, called and told her the hot water wasn’t working. According to The Day newspaper, she told him it could be fixed or to find a new room, but the man became angry and started cursing at her. At one point, he said he’d send his girlfriend to “kick her a**.”
Sarner then came to the front desk and attacked Caldwell, punching her repeatedly, calling her an “old monkey” and leaving her with a concussion and bruises.
The police were called to the scene, but as they waited, Sarner’s girlfriend Emily Orbay, 29, attacked Caldwell again. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Surveillance video showed Orbay push her against a wall and kick her repeatedly, leaving her with rib injuries.
Caldwell said Orbay said to her, “Black Lives Matter? Your life doesn’t matter; you don’t deserve to live on this earth.”
Caldwell was taken to a hospital and treated for multiple injuries.
The couple was arrested Monday in New York and charged with second-degree assault, third-degree assault, and intimidation based on bigotry and bias.
“I am almost 60 years old, for him to want to physically fight me is very, very, very, very hard for me,” she said, according to the New York Daily News. “I should not have to be begging for my life, that was devastating because there’s people that are dying, that are dead.
“This goes beyond police; these are just regular people, American citizens with hate. That man had so much hate for me in his heart.”
