A professor is no longer teaching students at the University of New Hampshire after it was discovered that he was pretending to be a woman of color online.
Under the Twitter handle @piney_, and bio “The Science Femme,” Professor Craig Chapman falsely identified himself as a woman of color and female academic. Under this guise, he boasted about overturning his department’s efforts to release a statement that condemned racism.
Chapman tweeted about ending the department’s woke statements on the recent social unrest. He said his part was the removal of all “woke” terminology from the department’s statement, which included anti-racism, white supremacy, white privilege, and claims of systemic racism.
Chapman used his fictitious social media identity as a weapon in online arguments, and when he was called out on his racism in working against the interests of people of color, he defended himself with the lie that he was “an immigrant woman of color who grew up in poverty, sleeping on a dirt floor,” Complex reported.
Chapman’s “alter ego” was discovered by digital sleuths who found strikingly similar posts between his fake account and his personal account. By the end of September, his whole fake persona was revealed: “The Science Femme” was actually Craig Chapman, a white male assistant professor of chemistry at UNH.
Chapman is the fourth person in academia discovered to have posed as a person of color over the past several weeks. While others have shamelessly used their fake identities to advance their careers, Chapman has done the opposite, harassing real working women in the field of science.
The university has since launched an investigation into Chapman’s actions. “UNH was recently made aware of allegations on social media about a member of its faculty,” a spokesperson told The Daily Beast. “We are deeply troubled by what we’ve learned so far and immediately launched an investigation. The employee at the center of allegations on social media is on leave and not in the classroom. In order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, the university is unable to comment further.”
Chapman did not respond to repeated requests for comment. The fake Twitter account and his personal account have since been deleted.
