A white student has been released from jail without bail after brutally attacking his black teacher.
18-year-old Corey David Burfield was charged with both first degree and third-degree assault after beating a teacher assistant to the point of life support dependency.

According to Atlanta Black Star, Mohammed Dukuly has served as a paraprofessional at Harrison Education Center for 10 years. The attack, which was reportedly unprovoked, involved Burfield knocking Dukuly to the ground causing him to hit his head and then punching him repeatedly. Dukuly lost consciousness during the attack and was rushed to the hospital.

The 18-year-old was allowed to return home without posting bail after his mother reportedly assured the judge that she would look after him.

While the student does not have a criminal record, he does have an extensively documented history of physical abuse against other teachers, students, and family members. Past attacks include one incident where he allegedly “made countless swings at a male staff’s head, face, and throat.”

While the attacker awaits his next court appearance set for June 22 from the comfort of his own home, Dukuly is making gracious improvements.

“We feel like a heavy mountain has been removed from our head,” Imam Dukuly, the uncle of the victim said. “He can recognize us and we are very excited and grateful to Allah and for the community support. It’s our prayer that the strength we see will continue in his recovery.”

Burfield has been ordered to stay away from Dukuly and is required to wear an ankle monitor. He will also have to visit a counselor.
