Late last month, Whitney Houston’s best friend and rumored girlfriend, Robyn Crawford, announced the forthcoming release of her tell-all, “A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston.” Now, just weeks later, the songstress’ sister-in-law and executor of her estate has announced even more projects, in honor of the late legend.
For the last seven years, Pat Houston has declined almost, if not every, pitch and entertainment deal in regards to her late sister-in-law. But now, it appears Houston and the estate are ready to get back to business.
“Everything is about timing for me,” Pat Houston, Whitney’s former manager, said in an interview. “It’s been quite emotional for the past seven years. But now, it’s about being strategic.”
Houston and the estate have a few projects lined up, including a hologram tour, a possible musical, brand deals and an album of unreleased tracks. According to the New York Times, in an effort to get the ball rolling, the estate signed a deal with Primary Wave Music Publishing in an attempt to rebuild Whitney’s business in music. Although, the music and marketing company will receive 50 percent of the estate’s estimated $14 million assets as part of the deal, including royalties from music, film, and merch – with the right to exploit her name and likeness, the estate hopes the new deal will help resurrect Houston’s image and reputation.
“Before she passed, there was so much negativity around the name; it wasn’t about the music anymore,” Pat complained. “People had forgotten how great she was. They let all the personal things about her life outweigh why they fell in love with her in the first place.”
“Whitney was America’s sweetheart, and the idea now is to remind people that that is what her legacy is,” Primary Wave’s founder said, and the first project to help rebuild Houston’s career is the hologram tour, as Pat revealed it has “taken precedence over everything.”
